About Karen Curry:

Karen Curry is a Toronto based visual artist who spends part of each year on Canada's west coast. Born in Yellowknife, N.W.T., the quality of light and the vastness of the north have left an indelible mark on her work. After graduating from the University of Alberta she moved to Toronto in 1984 as the director of lithography at Open Studio.

Curry now works predominately in the mediums of painting and photography in her Toronto studio.

Since 1990, she has been primarily involved in the exploration of objects of containment: images of vessels, boats, stones, urns, shafts, grinding stones. The objects depicted are in the process of eroding, being taken back by nature. The method of painting on birch is intimately related to erosion and excavation - sanding and scraping the surface to reveal the pigments and texture trapped beneath the surface.

In Vessels, Karen returns to the exploration of solitary boat hulls Initiated over a decade ago. She began the first series of boat images in the fall of 1993 following a trip to Greenland. She had encountered a solitary boat hull - inverted, ribs exposed, lashed down to wooden posts on a rocky hillside. And so began her fascination with the ribs of eroding boats. During her travels she now seeks out the powerful forms of these traditional skin covered, wood framed boats. It is her practice as an artist to photograph the boats on location and then return to the studio to begin painting and working with these elemental structures. These organic forms, carry the mystery of time suspended, as they are at once recognizable yet never fully explained. History, culture and mystery are all present in the sanded and layered ribs of the boats that are revealed.

Karen Curry has exhibited widely in both solo and group shows nationally and internationally. Her work is held in numerous public, corporate and private collections.

À propos de Karen Curry:

Karen Curry, artiste en arts visuels, vit à Toronto, mais chaque année séjourne quelque temps sur la côte ouest canadienne.

Née à Yellowknife, T.N.O., son travail est influencé par la qualité de la lumière et l’étendue du nord.

Après sa graduation de l’Université d’Alberta, elle emménage à Toronto en 1984 et occupe le poste de directrice de lithographie au « Open Studio ».

Dans son atelier de Toronto, Curry s’exprime surtout par la peinture et la photographie.

Depuis 1990 elle explore principalement l’objet-récipient : des images de vaisseaux, bateaux, roches, urnes, cheminées, meules. Ses sujets sont en voie de corrosion, retournant à la terre. Sa peinture sur écorce est intimement liée à l’érosion et l’excavation – sablage et grattage de la surface afin de révéler pigments et textures sous-jacents.

En 2003 Karen lança une série de photos-giclées intitulée « Points de vue ». Jusque là, elle utilisait la photographie comme matériel de base pour ses diverses méthodes d’expression. Elle réalisa qu’un volet de sa photographie méritait d’être explorée, en résulta « Points de vue ». Cette série explore la rencontre de l’artiste avec le paysage en juxtaposant des duo de photos panoramiques. Cette exploration se continue dans « Avenues to Stillness », en utilisant des photographies panoramiques individuelles de grand format.

Karen Curry a tenu plusieurs expositions solo et collectives au pays et à l’extérieur. Ses oeuvres sont représentées dans de nombreuses collections publiques, corporatives et privées.
